I went to BJ’s Wholesale Club last Sunday to buy pork chops to make training treats for the week. I generally cook and cut up 8 pounds of pork chops every week… for dogs.
So while at BJ’s, I thought I’d get a rotisserie chicken (for me), since their rotisserie chickens are larger and much cheaper than Shop-Rite. But alas… the rotisserie chickens were sold out. All gone. “Ugh,” I thought, “I really wanted a chicken…”
The next morning I arrived at The Academy of Dog Training, (with a couple bags of home made treats) where I teach group classes on Mondays. There was a large plastic crate outside the door. Did someone leave a dog outside? What the heck? So I walked over and peaked into the crate… and there was a chicken inside!
WHAT??? Did I somehow make a misinterpreted wish for a chicken? My life is generally crazy every day, but this is too much…
So I went into the Academy, where Carrie (the owner) was conducting a private lesson with Kristen and her dog. I walked up, and stood there with a stunned look on my face. “Carrie, I know you’ve been feeding the feral cats in the parking lot, but are you now feeding feral chickens???”
Carrie replied, “Yes,” and continued with her session.
I walked away, confused.
Later I found out that when Carrie and Kristen had arrived at the Academy, there was a chicken running around in the parking lot. They chased her down, and after about 30 minutes were able to catch her and put her in a crate for safe keeping. Since Kristen has a farm, and chickens, she took the chicken home with her.
“What’s the chicken’s name?” I asked, because I like to know such things.
“Kristen named the chicken Doggy,” Carrie told me. You see, Kristen already had a dog named Birdie. Now she has a dog named Birdie, and a bird named Doggy…
Welcome to my crazy world.
